When you’ve had enough
It’s amazing how we get sucked into the routines of life. Wakeup, get dressed, prepare breakfast and scuttle behind the kids. Then it’s off to the 9-5 grind, which has also become another routine and before we know it, it’s time to drive home and do it all over again tomorrow.
There are countless ways out there including workshops, bestselling authors and prescription drugs that tout all the benefits of helping us to reclaim our sanity, when the world comes bearing down on us, but nature has done us one better. Nature gave us the beach.
Beaches are renown all over the world for their beauty and their restorative healing powers, but how often do we indulge ourselves? Maybe there is no better time than right now, but how can this experience be fully embraced and not just misused.
Packing for the beach
After you’ve already committed to your beach getaway, whether it has turned into a one day excursion or an entire weeklong extravaganza, decisions have to be made; with the first important decision being what to pack. This is when you have to fight the urge to do what comes natural and that is over think the trip. Since you have already decided that the beach is going to be your time to unwind, you have to completely unplug.
So that means there will be no space for the laptop, the endless binders of corporate ledgers you didn’t get to review or any of the planned work, your daytime hours have left so miserably untouched. This is your treat, so take care not to ruin it.
All you need is the bare necessities to get by, which are a pair of perfectly comfortable sandals, sunglasses and a beach hat that protects your perfectly un-coifed hair.
What to do when you get there
Once your there the first thing that needs to be done is to set your bags down and commit yourself to becoming one with the beach. There’s a ritual like feeling that is passed through your body, when you immediately put your toes in the surf, or bend down and pick up your first seashell. It is in that moment when you realize that through the clutter of life and as much as things do matter, nothing matters!
As you reclaim your moment of self, and draw upon the very nature of individualism. Embrace the radiance of the sun on your skin, the twinkle of the shimmering blue waters as the tide recedes and the marvel of how something as shapeless as water can form the deepest caverns and carve out the smoothest rock. Embrace the ebb and flow of the tide as it urges you to let your cares float away.
Taking advantage of your beach excursion does take some sort of will power and restraint. During this beach getaway most forms of technology will have to be abandoned and forgotten. The smart phone will have to be unbridled from your wrist, the iPad will be left on the desk and the kindle will be safely docked at home.
For a retreat like this to work properly, we have to trick our minds into releasing all the holds that keep us tethered to our modern world. This will be the time to truly embrace the feel of a hardback novel again, indulge in a glass of white zinfindel at noon and forget the constraints of time!
As your body slowly realizes there is no longer a sense of urgency or endless tasks to complete, a new-found wave of relief will sweep over your entire being and your body will begin to purge the endless streams of concerns that seek to weigh you down.
Taking it with you
As the sun sets and you begin to feel that longing for the last embrace from your new-found love; be reassured in knowing this won’t be the last time you will meet. For in this lovers tryst you did not learn how to have an escapade, but you learned how to love life. How to embrace the cool touch of the oceans lips on your toes, how to yearn with excitement as the sun bathed you in its glory and how to allow your cares to fade away.
But it was not a one-sided love affair, while you traded all your cares and concerns for a little peace of happiness. The beach gained another soul to be one with as it traded its healing powers with another being. But for him, he doesn’t wish to be forgotten.
As you slowly assimilate back into your day-to-day life, you can reflect upon the moments you shared, the warmth of his touch and the healing powers he possesses. And allow that magic to permeate your body once again through your memories, until you two meet again, and the union is once again consummated.
